About this tool
Code 128 encodes any ASCII text and is the standard for shipping labels, asset tags and inventory. EAN-13 (Europe and international) and UPC-A (US and Canada) are retail product barcodes with a fixed number of digits and a final check digit. Enter 12 (EAN) or 11 (UPC) digits and the check digit is calculated, or enter the full code to have it verified.
Rendering uses the MIT-licensed JsBarcode library. For retail use, you need numbers officially assigned by GS1. Generating a barcode does not register a product number.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a barcode for my product to sell in stores?
You can render one here, but retailers require a GS1-assigned company prefix and product number. Get your numbers from GS1 first.
What is a check digit?
The last digit of EAN and UPC codes, calculated from the other digits, so scanners can catch misreads. This tool adds or verifies it.
Which format should I use for inventory?
Code 128. It is compact, supports letters and numbers, and every scanner reads it.
