About this tool
A slug is the readable part of a URL, such as /how-to-bake-bread/. Google recommends simple, descriptive URLs with hyphens between words. Hyphens are read as word separators, while underscores join words together. The generator turns accented letters into plain ASCII (é → e, ß → ss), changes “&” to “and”, drops apostrophes so “don’t” becomes “dont”, and squeezes all other punctuation into single separators.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words and an underscore as joining them, so hyphenated slugs match searches better.
Should I remove stop words like “the” and “of”?
It makes slugs shorter, which is nice, but it is optional. Keep them if removing them changes the meaning.
How long should a slug be?
Short and descriptive: usually 3–6 words. A 50–60 character limit keeps URLs readable when shared.
