About this tool

A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. Change one character and the hash changes completely. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are calculated with the browser’s native Web Crypto API (crypto.subtle.digest). MD5 is not part of Web Crypto, so it uses the small, MIT-licensed js-md5 library. Text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes, so results match sha256sum and other command-line tools.

Security note: MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security. Use SHA-256 or better for signatures and integrity checks. Never store passwords with a plain hash; use a slow password hash such as Argon2 or bcrypt.

Frequently asked questions

Is MD5 still safe?

Not for security. Collisions can be made in seconds. It is still fine as a quick checksum for spotting accidental changes.

Why does my hash differ from another tool?

Check for a trailing newline (echo adds one, so use echo -n) and make sure both tools use UTF-8.

Can a hash be reversed?

No. Hashes are one-way. Short or common inputs can still be guessed with lookup tables, which is why passwords need salted, slow hashing.
